On a late April evening this year, dozens of cars sat parked in front of a large, inflatable screen outside the Rose Bowl in Pasadena for a pop-up drive-in experience. Such socially distanced screenings have seen a resurgence in these pandemic times, but this wasn’t any ordinary drive-in.
This crowd consisted of Emmy voters, who had all made the trek to watch an episode of Bravo’s “Top Chef” while snacking on such artisan dishes as Korean fried chicken with a kimchi dipping sauce, a pupusa with braised jerk pork and cheddar masa, and popcorn sprinkled with chicken-skin furikake and spiced caramel.
It was a twist on the Emmy For Your Consideration events of yore, when Television Academy members and their guests would trek to a venue to watch an episode of a contender, sit through a panel with series stars and producers, and then gorge on free food and booze in the lobby.

The film, TV and pop culture magazine Entertainment Weekly is going monthly. The publication under the Meredith brand also said Thursday that they have named deputy editor Jd Heyman as the new editor-in-chief during the transition period, a post previously held by Henry Goldblatt who is stepping down from the role after 17 years.
The July 5 issue will be the last weekly edition. The publication will start its monthly venture in August with a Comic-Con themed edition. In addition, the publication will continue to expand its digital, social, video and experiential reach on EW.com. Despite becoming a monthly publication, Entertainment Weekly will retain its name.
Entertainment Weekly was previously at Time Inc. but in 2017 landed at Meredith as part of a $2.8 billion sale. Meredith has since sold Time, Fortune and Sports Illustrated, but maintained ownership of EW and People.
According to comScore, Entertainment Weekly‘s site took in 18.9 million unique visitors in April.

Thursday night at the famed Hollywood Athletic Club (where the first Emmys were held in 1949), Amazon’s month-long Emmy Fyc experience welcomed “Catastrophe” executive producers/writers/stars Sharon Horgan and Rob Delaney for a screening of their series finale and a Q&A moderated by Entertainment Weekly’s Henry Goldblatt. Horgan and Delaney dished on the final episode, which streamed back in March, in front of TV academy members and also remembered the late, great Carrie Fisher, who earned a 2017 Emmy nomination for playing Rob’s mother on the show.
SEEAmazon unveils complete line-up for Emmy Fyc experience: ‘Mrs. Maisel,’ ‘Man in the High Castle,’ ‘Homecoming’ and …
“That scene really makes me want to go to the toilet,” Horgan joked about the series finale that ended with the married characters taking a swim in the ocean after a huge fight. “[The ending] is kind of happyish depending on your disposition,” she added.

It looks like there will be a little “Westworld” and “Westeros” on the west coast this week after all: In partnership with HBO and Instagram, Entertainment Weekly will feature “Game of Thrones” and “Westworld” activations inside the magazine’s annual San Diego Comic-Con party, The Party Report has learned exclusively.
Much like Vanity Fair during Oscar week in Hollywood, Entertainment Weekly continues to swallow up Comic-Con week in San Diego, and so it goes this year. Editor-In-Chief Henry Goldblatt and team are printing an on-the-ground special issue of the magazine, relocating their Sirius Xm studios to San Diego, and once again bringing their “Women Who Kick Ass” panel to Hall H during Sdcc 2018.
For the industry though, EW’s annual Saturday night bash is the closest equivalent to Vanity Fair’s mythologized Oscar night gathering.
